As we enter Muharram 1447H…
On reflecting on deen achievements the previous year, and the sacred month of Muharram.
Assalamu'alaikum wr wb my dear friend!
Here are 2 Ideas, A Verse to Reflect Upon & One Question for you 👇
Two Ideas this week
1. My deen milestones last year…
The year 1446H has been a rollercoaster of events for me. I got hospitalised in the last month of my university and that led me to taking a break after graduation to review my deen.
Sure, I did not start earning money like my peers, and am “financially behind”… but Alhamdulillah…
I gained so many opportunities which made my heart feel content… and I am sharing this in hopes it will also motivate you!
I was able to volunteer in the mosque more often.
I got assigned to be a muazzin twice a week for the mosque.
I was given the opportunity for quran recitation on the opening of a new mosque.
For the first time in my life I slaughtered a sheep (two actually!) for Eid Al-Adha.
I met so many people who gave me so many wisdoms and advice for akhirah.
I formed a technology team and we are working on an application for the ummah (still in the early stages)
I built an Islamic social media page which gained more than 30,000 followers and now have a newsletter of almost 700 subscribers! Alhamdulillah.
And so many more blessings I cannot count or write here…
A year ago when I was sick in the hospital, with my blood pressure critically low and I felt like I was drifting off…
All that was going through my mind was…
What am I going to bring to akhirah?
And so when I recovered, I decided that I have to reprioritise what I am chasing after in dunya.
At the end of the day, I don’t know whether Allah will accept these deeds (though I hope that would be the case). I am thankful to Allah for allowing me to experience the past year of events despite the number of times I have failed to be a good muslim.
To add to that, I have also had my fair share of shortcomings towards Allah. From spending too much time on social media at times, and lacking in Quran memorisation and studies…
I still have a long way to go for my deen, and I hope this year 1447H will be an improvement from last year inshaAllah.
(oh and it was also a year where I was more conscious of the Islamic months and not just Ramadan…)
2. Muharram a sacred month.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The most virtuous fasting after the month of Ramadan is Allah's month Al-Muharram." (Jami’ At-Tirmidhi 740)
In another hadith from Sahih Muslim 1163a,
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The most excellent fast after Ramadan is God's month. Al-Muharram, and the most excellent prayer after what is prescribed is prayer during the night.
In these hadiths, The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ referred to the month of Muharram as شَهْرُ الله. Meaning the month of Allah.
Muharram is also considered one of the four sacred months in Islam.
A key event that took place in Muharram during the time of The Prophet ﷺ, was the Hijrah of Rasulullah ﷺ and his Sahabas from Makkah to Madinah. Perhaps I will write more on this on the following post!
As for now, we understand that Muharram is a month honoured, so let us also take the time to plan out how we want to improve ourselves in our deen for this month (and also the coming months too!).
A Verse to Reflect Upon
If you tried to count Allah’s blessings, you would never be able to number them. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Surah An-Nahl 16:18
One Question for you
We all know the ultimate purpose of life as being 51:56, “And I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me.“
Do you have a short-term purpose or objective that aligns with the verse?
