Bismillah, A Step For Our Deen!
Let’s reflect how our Ramadan went and gain some ideas on what we can work on. These 5 signs are just some indicators of a successful Ramadan, feel free to tell us more!
Ramadan might be over, but we are still alive and well to improve ourselves inshaAllah!
5 Signs of a Successful Ramadan
1. You are now more God-conscious
You find yourself more aware of Allah in your daily actions, speech, and choices. This is part of Ihsan (Excellence), to live as though you see Allah not in His form (for He is beyond form), but through knowing your Creator, His Names and Attributes and His Divine Decree. If you have not reached that level, then at least know that He sees you.
And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.
Surah Al-An’am 6:59
We have to remind ourselves how Allah is Al-Baseer (All-Seeing) and As-Sami’ (All-Hearing). He is more aware of us than ourselves. To think that the falling of leaves and rain are accounted for, how could we doubt Allah and His Wisdom for us?
2. You leave Ramadan with a better routine in your deen
It could be prioritising your prayer earlier, intentionally going to a mosque more often, having a strengthened relationship with Quran.
It doesn’t have to be big changes, but remember even the smallest changes adds up to something big.
And Allah loves the deeds done consistently even if they are small.
And whenever a surah is revealed, some of them (i.e: hypocrites) say, ‘Which of you has this increased in faith?’
As for those who believe, it has increased them in faith…
Surah At-Taubah 9:124
The Quran strengthens the believers. It is important to develop a close relationship with Quran. Don’t let go of Quran at any month of Islam.
3. You have a strategy or resolve
You have a better strategy and position in how you continue good deeds, not just falling back to where you were before Ramadan.
It could be having a dedicated space for prayer in your room, using a fresh prayer mat, pasting reminders on your wall to make dua. To have a routine of dhikrs or things you want to do before you go to sleep.
Whether it is a change of environment, having a muslim friend to remind you to memorise Quran, you can implement more strategies that will fill your time with more ibadah.
O you who have believed, be patient and endure, and remain stationed, and fear Allah so that you may succeed.
Surah Ali-’Imran 3:200
This verse outlines some strategies to strengthen our faith:
Patience - Developing inner resilience, and Allah is with the patient. (2:153)
Perseverance - Not just endure but to actively work towards a better version of yourself
Hold your ground/ Maintain a firm position - People may challenge you, whether it is about your prayer or hijab or halal standards. Or you may feel an internal battle that is overwhelming. But you have to hold your faith strong.
Taqwa of Allah - It is not just fearing Allah like being fearful when there is a lion or a bear in front of you… It is about having an awe of the greatness of Allah that you fear doing something that might displease Him because you are aware of His Greatness and Favours upon you.
4. You feel a stronger resolve not to sin
A sign of a good Ramadan is when we feel uncomfortable to go back to old habits or sins. We have gained a better sensitivity to committing sins. Do not let Shaytaan convince you otherwise.
But as for he who feared standing before his Lord and restrained the soul from unlawful desire, then indeed, Paradise will be his refuge.
Surah An-Naziat 79:40-41
We should have gained a stronger control over our nafs and not engage in acts that compromise our control.
Always remember this: While Allah can forgive our sins, sins may have a longer-term psychological impact on us and our relationships with others. This is the way sins are “sticky“. So avoid them while you can, and for those that we have slipped up, we have to work much harder to protect ourselves from falling into sin again.
5. You make continuous Istighfar
Nevertheless, we may commit minor sins out of forgetfulness. The Prophet ﷺ seeks forgiveness from Allah more than 70 times (in some narrations 100 times) a day.
Even though he is sinless, he still seeks forgiveness.
Why?
Because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has deep knowledge of Allah. Known as ma’rifah of Allah. The more one knows Allah, the more one will feel the weight of the smallest lapse in presence or gratitude towards Him.
Istighfar is not only for sins. It is a means to purify and elevate one’s rank in the sight of Allah, to draw closer to Allah. Regular istighfar also reminds us more on Allah, keeping us alert from distractions and sins.
Indeed, Allah loves those who constantly repent and loves those who purify themselves.
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:222
